How to Pass a Prop Firm Challenge: The Method

Updated on October 31, 2026 · method and rules verified

Most challenges are not lost because the trader calls the market direction wrong. They are lost because a rule gets broken: a daily loss limit exceeded on a bad day, a limit that was misunderstood, a target chased too quickly. Here is a simple method for putting the rules on your side.

1. Read the rules before choosing the firm

Two challenges with the same target can be very different. The key question: is the total loss limit static (calculated from the starting balance) or trailing (it moves up with your gains)? A trailing limit shrinks your margin after every winning day. Our calculator shows what each rule means in dollars.

2. Set your own, stricter daily limit

If the firm allows a 5% loss per day, stop at 2 or 3%. One bad day should never be able to end your challenge. Write this limit down before you open the platform, not during the session.

3. Size each position based on the daily loss limit

Risking 0.5% of the account per trade leaves room for several losses in a row before you get close to the limit. Risking 2% per trade puts you two or three losses away from failing. Position size is calculated from your stop, not from the urge to finish quickly.

4. Don't chase the target

Most 2-step challenges no longer have a time limit. Aiming for 10% in one week pushes you to increase your risk. Aim for steady progress: some firms, such as FTMO on its 1-Step, even penalize gains concentrated in a single day.

5. Keep an eye on economic news

Some prop firms prohibit trading around high-impact news releases. Even when it is allowed, volatility can trigger the daily loss limit in a matter of seconds. Check the economic calendar every morning.

6. If you use a bot

  • Make sure the firm allows bots on your platform (see cTrader prop firms).
  • Code the daily limit into the bot itself.
  • Test it for several weeks on demo with the exact challenge rules.
  • Host it on a VPS to avoid interruptions.

7. Choose the right firm

To track your stats and spot your mistakes, a trading journal helps a lot: see our Tradezella review.

For a first attempt, a 2-step challenge with no time limit and a fee refund gives you the most margin. See our 2026 rankings and the prop firms with no time limit.
